The Custom Explained:
This custom of burying a statue of St. Joseph in the yard of one's residence goes back to Europe. Tradition has it buried face down ( prostrate ), facing your home. Prayers are then made asking St. Joseph to intercede for us, as our heavenly advocate, in petitioning Jesus to bring our request ( to sell our home ) to the Father. When this process is employed properly ( particularly the prayer and good intention ) there seems to be little doubt as to positive results ... based upon personal experience and testimony of scores of believers over the years.
Education ..... Understanding ..... Faith:
A statue of St. Joseph is not ( in and of itself ) an idol as described in the Bible. Catholics or non-Catholic Christians neither worship the saints nor idolize their statues. A statue of St. Joseph is not some golden calf being worshiped as a god. It is merely ( only ) an artistic rendering of a man, who, as husband to Mary, the Mother of Jesus Christ, held a place of close and personal association to the Son of God while on earth. Doubting the importance of a member of the Holy Family, an historical fact recorded within the pages of the Holy Bible, is tantamount to questioning the importance of Jesus Himself.
Why pray petitions to God indirectly through a saint?
Because we're including the Father and the Son, through Their Holy Ones ( in this case St. Joseph ). The importance of praying in the use of "props" ( in this case the buried statue of St. Joseph ), in order to seek extraordinary assistance, can not be overstated ... because it is to realize that a statue ( in and of itself ) is not going to help us if we do not understand our responsibility in the implication of it's use. This is especially true for those who've had little experience in offering-up prayers-in-petition of specific favors ( requests we place before God ). As for the statue: It is very important we remember to dig it back up after selling the home we're leaving ... and then giving it ( or an alternate ) a place of honor in our new home ... as a lasting reminder to the benefit of our respecting God's Holy Ones as legitimate source for spiritual help. Perhaps this custom has worked so well over the ages becasue we are, in great humility, seeking the assistance of someone was once one of us. Yet someone who now is in presumably better stead than we ourselves ... someone who may act as our heavenly advocate, through the intercession of our Lord Jesus Christ, to carry our petitions to the Father in our behalf.
Prayer to St. Joseph:
"Ever blessed and glorious Joseph, kind and loving husband to Mary, foster father to our Lord & Saviour Jesus, helpful friend of those in need: You who are the good man, protector of orphans, defender of the defenseless, patron of parents and heads of households ... look kindly upon this our request. To you, guardian of the Holy Family of Nazareth, do we now come for help and protection. Pray for us to Jesus for the favor we now ask " ( here name your petition - make your request to St. Joseph to petition the Father, in and through the Son, to sell your home as soon as possible and for a good and fair price ). "Obtain for us, who have asked in prayer, everything that is useful in the plan of God. Finally, dear St. Joseph, be with us and with all who are dear to us in our last moments ... that we may eternally sing the praises of Jesus. God is good. St. Joseph is good. Thanks be to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; and all the angels and saints of Almight God who may now conspire for our benefit in this prayer of petiion. Amen."
